The introduction date for the plastic hubs for the Supertoys larger class was almost six months earlier when Meccano released the 960 Albion Concrete Mixer in July 1960.Actually,
the first 960 models left the factory in June 1960,
so I guess this would then make June - July 1960 as the introduction date for these plastic hubs.Interesting that during this period,
Meccano was still introducing new
or producing existing Supertoys shod with the original Supertoys grooved hubs such as 977,
958,
930,
920,
689,
and 986.The interior of the box lid for the 958 with plastic hubs might hold the answer if an inspection stamp can be found.Bruce

Unfurtunately the 958 box lid does not have an inspection stamp. There are more Dinky Supertoys
from
the early sixties that can be found with plastic hubs like the 984
and 985.I have seen both with grey plastic hubs.
And I have another Dinky Supertoys with plastic hubs which was a surprise to me when I found it.I will try to post a picture this weekend.Rob

My next wheel variation is a 40a Riley in grass green with red hubs.It is very playworn. The green is a different shade than my other green Rileys.Small letters on the baseplate
and a very small numberplate at the front.Looks very much like the 40a described in a separate topic on this Forum. The red hubs are not repainted
or the model.I found the model in Houten at the stall of my friend John Worley

Sorry for the quality of the picture,
I need a new camera

Check out the two types of spun hubs for the 148 Ford Fairlane.Have not checked this variation with other models although I am sure someone has already done so ! Apologies for the image which was taken in 2002 with a camera with not many pixels !

Looks like cast silver color hubs on the metallic green Ford
and spun aluminium hubs on the apple green.I am not sure.Cast silver hubs are surely found on the 167 AC Aceca.Kind regards,
Rob

Mine - this one - too has the open base plate. Apparently a batch of the first ridged hubs version,
but still with the the prewar / early postwar base plate.(
I like this shade of green very much on this model
).Best regards,
Jan

Hi all,
Thanks Rob for the Red hubs Riley picture,
another one I had no idea was out there. As regards the Snowplough blade mystery I have long ago given up trying to put any sort of timeline together for variations,
some like the 410 Tipper seem to have been randomly assembled
from
old stocks of parts
and pre painted bodies in no particular order whatsoever.Likewise the plastic hubs on the Leyland Octopus
where
at least two types of hub were in use,
and they were both randomly fitted to the same model. It would not surprise me if a few old stock pre painted yellow / black blades were found in the stores long
after
the silver one was introduced,
and they were dropped onto the assembly line to get rid of them.Chris Warr.Ps Thanks for the wonderful pictures,
keep them coming !

Rob Both 148 Fairlanes had spun hubs,
the pea green on the left was the usual style,
whereas the one on the metallic green was produced to a different shape.I wish I had kept it now ! By the way,
the inside of both hubs were exactly the same.Bruce
