Forum - Things to Fix

Forum - Things to Fix was created by Dave.Kaun
This topic is similar to the Posts to Move where members can bring system faults to the attention of the managers to fix something. Once the fix is completed the post would be deleted. Again this is to keep the size down to a manageable level.

Dave.....I find the recent comments section lacking. It appears that for now, only the first few words are shown of the comment, with nothing to indicate what topic it applies to. Myself, I would prefer seeing the topic listed that the comment is listed under. For example, I just posted some new photos and comments on the Speed of the Wind Racing Car, but there is no way to know that, other than sifting through all of the comments first. I'm concerned that some potentially interesting posts are not getting noticed.Best regards, Terry

I do agree with you, Terry, I think this should really be improved. The context of the recent comments, the way presented, is lost. No doubt Dave and Al will know a solution for that, and I realize that - like many other possible improvements - this one will be tackled too in the end. I'd like to express once more my admiration for what Dave and Al have realized up till now. In togetherness and harmony we should be able to solve remaining problems and reach the goals for a fine DTCA website and forum. Kind regards, Jan (I expect my dead private email to be repaired within a few days)

The recent comments panel was originally intended just as a pulse checker, so that members could see if there had been any activity since they last looked. But I get that it's kind of become a primary navigation tool, because members are more likely to be pursuing active conversations than legacy ones. So what you're saying makes perfect sense and I've updated this panel to display to which topic each comment is replying. From Pedant's Corner, I should mention that the Recent Comments panel was not actually broken, so this update is not a 'fix' in any repair sense. Perhaps new or updated feature requests should have a different topic?

Al---Thanks for making that change to fhe comments listing; one can now see what the comment was linked to, which will be a big help. As far as where to log these types of suggestions, I guess you could create another line item other than 'fixing something'......whatever is easy and makes sense. Another item I have noticed is that some older topics do,have several different listings for the same model.....is there any way to combine those under one heading or topic?Best regards, Terry

Gentlemen, I am truly impressed how quickly you all become aware of changes in the Forum. Thank you Al for this excellent change to the Recent Comments section. There is no doubt now which Forum the comment is in. It is this type of feedback that will help both Al and I gradually improve the website.

Dave/Al---Another thought I have is that maybe we should place these forum topics that relate to forum or site issues in a separate box, as they do not have anything to do with our Dinky collecting efforts, but are very necessary and should be visible somewhere nearby. I would also suggest placing in the same 'box' other threads that have to do with using the site.....for new people...how to post, how to get the pdf titles, how to post photos, etc. I think those should be permanent 'stickies' in a prominent location and separate from the model postings. The new forum topics now only have this help stuff, and nothing is visible on the models, unless you open the forum page and notice what is new.................just some more suggestions that may help.Best regards, Terry

Al/Dave---Did someone move or consolidate one of the posts on 23e Speed of the Wind Racing Car, located under British Automobiles? Just a few days ago, there were 2 separate posts/topics for it, and one included some photos of the real car.....those posts are now gone and no photos of the real car. Can this be restored??? Best regards, Terry

Dave May I join the chorus in expressing my appreciation for the 'new' NEW COMMENTS. A vast improvement, with its clear identification of the subject, although with due respect, I always checked everything that was new showing in bold anyhow! However, one section of the Forum which perhaps takes up space, is the ACTIVE FORUM TOPICS now into its ninth page This section is sorted in alpha-numerical order or more correctly 'numerical-alpha' order. Perhaps if it were to be sorted chronologically, it could act as an additional support to the NEW COMMENTS that at present is restricted to 35 entries and then the 36th drops off the radar. Of course, one can see now that many New Comments are in the same Topic. The ACTIVE FORUM TOPICS could then be the main source for readers to read all that is new on a particular Topic. Finally, when you stated at the very beginning:This topic is similar to the Posts to Move where members can bring system faults to the attention of the managers to fix something. Once the fix is completed the post would be deleted. Again this is to keep the size down to a manageable level. I presume if one has a number of problems, it would be best to bring them to your attention, each having their own post, to enable you to delete that post after the problem has been resolved? Bruce and others, It won't be necessary to create separate posts for each problem unless you have a large number of them (more than 3). The post can stay until the problems in it are all addressed. There have been some excellent suggestions some of which I will need to talk with Al about. Dave (181)

Dave Thank you for your very quick response! What you have suggested makes perfect sense - and saves space, so sticking with the 162 Ford Zephyr topic, would it be possible for Al to perform his magic and bring back the rest of Post #14 written by Adrian. This Post is essential to be complete as Adrian spent a lot of time preparing it as well as the information he put together with the numerous photographs, is reflected in subsequent Posts. Unfortunately, I must have deleted the email advice sent out at the time, otherwise I could 'complete' it on his behalf! One final question, or just a query. Why is it your little wheel and Canadian flag (as well as most other members with their appropriate flags) differs to us living in Australia that has the flag followed by the wheel?? Is it because 'we are Down Under'!!! Just curious, so please do not change the sequence - makes 'us' stand out! (Although I would prefer a ridged or spun hub rather than the Speedwheel at present!!
) Kind regards Bruce (150) 20160408/876.1215
