There seems to be no definitive list of the Code 2 models produced by John Gay from 1979, and apart from the list in Mike & Sue Richardson's list in their Vol 4 book of Dinky Toys, I have only seen one other, smaller list on the internet. Over the years I have added about 100 of these John Gay Code 2 models to my collection, but apart from John Ramsay's rough value estimates we don't really know much about values, scarcity or numbers at all. Has anyone seen any more detailed information about these colourful and interesting Dinkys?

Many thanks Jan : I have the list that you mentioned and it is useful to look at in conjunction with the extensive Richardson list and the list of just 43 Code 2 models in Ramsay, some of which are, in fact, original Dinkys (MJ Hire Service, Simpsons etc), and others by Roulet. It would be helpful for collectors if Ramsay or Vectis could research the John Gay model output to explore which of the liveries are most plentiful, and which may only have had a few examples made and may therefore therefore be more valuable. Asking prices by some sellers are up to 100 and yet other MB examples may be obtained for as little as 20.

David The Dinky Toys Encyclopaedia contains a list of 15 Dinky Toys code one # 410 Bedford CF vans 386 John Gay Bedford CF three by Roulet some by mikeandsue and other organisations etc ... one code three 12 photos of code 1 plain vans with no transfers all in different colours10 # 412 vans also plastic samples and a lot of other stuff on the subject. The list is certainly not complete but I add to it when ever I find a new variation.Of course all this is illustrated by large photos of the model, the base plate, the box when a photo is available etc... We will never know how many of each have been made, the only quantity that I know is for the Roulet models of which 106 have been made for each of the three variations. John Gay will probably not release his quantities, he probably does not know himself.About the prices, I think that 20 - 30 for a MIB model is a fair price, after all they are code 3s only. All the best Jacques

Many thanks for your valuable information Jacques : I don't have a copy of the encyclopaedia but I can see that it fills in many of the gaps I have mentioned. Do you have the contact details of John Gay? If so, I am willing to approach him for further information towards filling in the details about these models that are missing from Ramsay and other catalogues. I take your point about prices, but values on all Dinky models are based on 1. Scarcity and 2. Condition. This rule will surely remain true for the John Gay variations, so to establish numbers is an important first step.I recently picked up a MIB pink version bearing a 'CAMUS' Napoleoon Brandy logo which has all the ear marks of a John Gay issue - quite a break from the normal run of JG Code 3 colours.
