It was seven years ago already that I was given this box lid of the 39 series by an old collector friend of mine who owns the complete pre war 39 series. He did not have much interest (and facilities, room) in keeping the lid in his collection. It was in a splendid condition. The only obvious deficiency was a rather large loose, completely split edge and corner (lower left on the picture). It was professionally repaired subsequently for me by a paper restorator, the only trace of which can be seen in the somewhat darker areas over there, which he filled in with an especially prepared (and matching coloured) paper pulp. The result could not be better, both esthetically and technically. As this is the most essential and artistic part of the box, I did not care in the first place of how to reproduce the box underneath. I can do that less demanding job myself. I merely have some post war 39 series models, but it would be a nice match. Of course the box is rather rare, but images of the box and its contents are shown every now and then, so the looks of the lower part and its insert are well known. Now I would be interested to know what the exact height of this box should be. Also, I would very much appreciate if someone could give the height of the insert as well, and / or provide me with a scan or photograph of the insert (or just the part with the cut-outs), as to have a format to reproduce that as well. The size does not have to be 1:1, if just the relative measures are correct. There might be another less time consuming solution. Does anyone of the members know if a replica of the complete box is available? Then I would just have to buy such a replica and replace the replica box lid by the real one! I look forward to an anwer and solution for my problem!Thank you for your attention, and kind regards, Jan Werner

A posting of mine of almost 4 years ago above. Perhaps it's worth while to ask your renewed attention for this. I'd love to have the lower part of the box - if only as a replica. This would enable a complete presentation of my 39s in such a presentation box. Hasn't any replica been made in the intermediate years? A nice combination of my 39a Packard and 39c Oldmobile below: As well as a more artistic streamline view of my 39's Studebaker and Lincoln Zephyr. Regards, Jan

Jan--Lovely 39 models in wonderful condition, they are still one of my favorite Dinky series. That was wonderful that you were given that box lid and it appears to be in very nice condition. I see lots of later reproduction boxes, but have not come across any pre-war, but you would think that the same folks that make the later ones could also do that.Terry

Jan--here is a picture of two of my favorite 39 series, the Packard and the Chrysler. The Chrysler I bought new from H.Hudson Dobson in 1958, when they still had new old stock around, so only paid $.85 for it then. I am also trying available light for these and some other pictures............ Terry

If I'm not mistaken some pre-war boxes of this kind have been re-produced already in Britain. I hope our English colleagues can say more about that. Another few of my 39's (not as pristine as yours, but they were not available here anymore in the time you bought them as new, and apparently not as a Dinky-Toys-playing child). Regards, Jan

Jan--Thanks again for the feedback on my photos. I think I am slowly learning, and I did some further internet reading today on using the tonal curve with the RGB function. Here is my 39 series picture again with some, I hope, better adjustments. I think that it is now somewhat similar to your nice effort. And I apologize for drifting off topic on this thread!Terry

See Terry? If your photo is not too bad, there are plenty of opportunities to do some image optimization! Regards, Jan

This is a white metal ' copy ' of the Buick Viceroy by Buccaneer who made copies of other Dinky Toys such as the British Salmson 2
and 4 seater. Can some one tell me more about Buccaneer,
a Google search does not return anything.Mike only mentions the name on page 249 of the GBDT.I am also looking for information about Copycat who also seems to have made ' copies ' of Dinky Toys.

Justice at last...I found an extremely nice replica lower part box to be put below my Original 39
set
box lid ! I happen to have sold my Studebaker,
which was a repaint,
some time ago,
so I will have to do my utmost to find a fine original replacement for that one.Up till then my second Oldsmobile will serve as a stand in.Kind regards,
Jan
